Setting Client Preferences

With the Preferences screen you can customize the look and feel and many behaviors of dsClient Desktop. You can access the Preferences screen through the File>Preferences menu selection. Settings are stored in a preferences.xml in the directory from which the application is started. Settings are displayed in a dialog window with tabs for the major sections.

General Tab

On this tab you can configure application defaults, control pop-up warnings, and manage your remote XML libraries.

Server Preferences

If you have access to multiple dsTest platforms, you can select the Use Default Server checkbox and then select your preferred server from the drop-down list. Your default server will then be automatically selected whenever a list of servers is displayed. The full list will always be available; this setting simply sets the initial selection.

Connection Timeout (ms) controls how long dsClient will wait while attempting to establish a TCP socket with dsTest and how long it will wait for a response after sending a request to dsTest. If you are operating on a congested network or are accessing a remote facility over a slow link you may wish to increase this value. The default is 5000 milliseconds, the minimum value is 1000 milliseconds, and the maximum value is 65535 milliseconds.

XML Libraries

This section contains the same settings for managing remote libraries that are available in the Library Browser.

Delete/Overwrite Warnings

dsClient will warn you with a pop-up warning when a save as, rename, or other library action will overwrite an existing file. A warning will also be displayed when you delete a file or remove a significant portion of a configuration. When a warning dialog is displayed it will include a Don't display this warning again checkbox that you can use to suppress that specific type of warning going forward. You can also use the checkboxes in this section to suppress or restore warning messages.

Unsaved Changes Warnings

If you have modified the information in any of the configuration screens listed you'll be warned if you attempt to close the screen before saving your changes. Use the checkboxes in this section to manage those warnings. If you typically create ad hoc reports without saving them, you should clear the Report checkbox.

Default Directories

You can choose which directories will be initially selected in file choosers used for various purposes in this section. These settings will default to your home directory.

Reports Tab

The Reports tab contains default settings for all reports as well as settings that only apply to Tabular Reports or Chart Reports. In addition, this is where you can configure pass/fail criteria for SmartReport.

Common Report Settings

These setting apply to both Chart and Tabular reports and will be the defaults for new reports. You can set your preferred method for adding measurements to a report, report mode, and time zone (defaults to your PC's time zone).

Chart Preferences

For the most part these are the same settings currently available in the Chart Report's report configuration. What you can only do here is define up to six colors used to plot OM values and set the order of the line styles used. You'll find instructions on the screen.

SmartReport Preferences

With these settings, you can define multiple SmartReport Profiles and select the appropriate profile for a particular SmartReport. In a profile you can select which summary charts and dashboard panels are produced, and you can set the success criteria for the dashboard panels.

Display Tab

These settings control the general appearance and behavior of the application window.

Messenger Panels

Use these settings to display the validation errors panel whenever a new error is thrown, show the notification panel when a new notification is received, or show the log panel when a SEVERE log message is published.

Application Desktop

Choose whether you prefer to work with Floating Windows, each screen is displayed in an internal window, or a Tabbed Display (default), where each screen is displayed on a fixed desktop tab. Changes will take effect after the application is restarted.

Font and Scaling

You can choose the Default Font used in the application, which defaults to Verdana, Arial, or Helvetica depending on font availability, and adjust the magnification scale if needed based on your PC's screen resolution. Any changes you make will be applied to the example text in this section.
